The SEC Historical Society shares, preserves and advances knowledge of the history of financial regulation through its virtual museum and archive at www.sechistorical.org.
Founded in 1999, the Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
The SEC Historical Society is independent of and separate from the SEC, and receives no funding from the public sector. The virtual museum and archive is built and exhibited independent of any SEC oversight.
The Society’s virtual museum and archive opens the door to the history of financial regulation from the 20th century to the present, providing firsthand information on the regulation of the capital markets in the United States and the world.
The virtual museum and archive opened on June 1, 2002. Its collection is expanded and enhanced each month. The museum collection currently totals over 5,300 materials, including papers; photos; oral histories interviews; programs; film, radio and television documentaries; a timeline of regulatory developments against U.S. and world events from 1930 to the present; and galleries, permanent exhibits on specific subjects in regulatory history. These materials are not available from other online sources.
The virtual museum and archive is free and accessible worldwide at all times. Close to 300,000 visitors in 2011 used the museum, including regulators from Federal, state, municipal and international agencies; self-regulators; practitioners from law, accounting, auditing and financial services firms; academics - both professors and students; and the press.
